Whether you’ve just moved to Newcastle or have been living here a while, some of the most instagrammable food spots are right on your doorstep! We’ve rounded up some of our favourite places to grab food and drinks in Newcastle. There’s no better way to get to know a city than through its delicious food and great atmosphere!
Breakfast Spots
With pancakes stacked as high as Grey’s Monument and coffees that you self-titrate into clouds of milk, this is THE spot to whip out your phone and take some serious food-envy inflicting pics!
Located right beside Newcastle University Business School and The Helix, it’s no wonder why this spot is a hit amongst students!

The more plants the merrier at this venue! Not only do they have funky wall art, hilarious ever-changing mottos on lightboxes as you enter, and a token neon sign (hello new profile photo!) they also do an amazing job at brunch! Our personal favourite is the Shakshuka, or the Shloumi… we can’t decide it’s all so tasty!
Did you know: Horticulture also has the most extensive espresso martini menu ANYWHERE!? Over 100 types of espresso martini could definitely warrant a brunch-time cocktail.
@horticulturencl
Another fantastic breakfast spot in the heart of the Sandyford student suburb! There’s a dish for everyone and their cake counter is definitely one to check out!
This spot ticks all the instagram boxes: Fairy lights, tick! David bowie poster, tick! Plants galore, tick!! Make sure to come hungry because you’ll want to try one of everything on their menu!

Lunch
The best sandwiches in Newcastle lie in Olive and Bean, right in the centre of town beside Grainger Market. This is always a favourite of both students and locals, this lunch spot offers classic lunch dishes including soup, sandwiches, and salads. The retro golden syrup canisters on the table are your cutlery pots and the open brick walls mean this spot oozes cool rustic vibes.
Their cake counter when you enter the cafe is a sight to behold - it would be a shame to say no to lunch-dessert!
@oliveandbean
If you are a student in Newcastle you’ll be well acquainted with this spot! Market Shaker has it all, great music, outdoor garden, slushie cocktails, and the most amazing woodfired pizzas!
If it’s a sunny lunch spot you’re after, hit up the student’s favourite. You might not want to leave and end up there for the rest of the night! Make sure to get a photo with one of the many neon signs for the insta grid, of course!

This little cafe in the heart of student-hub Jesmond, is the perfect place to meet for a coffee and some lunch on the weekend. It’s a cafe inside an old church, so it's hitting all the right aesthetics from the outside-in! The breakfasts are renowned and the lunches are even better ranging from open sandwiches to burgers, flatbreads and more!
When the plates come as eloquently decorated as this you can’t help but get multiple food shots to do the plates justice. We didn’t know we needed minute flowers as garnish to our burgers, but we do now!
Also: this lunch spot is mega dog friendly and even has doggy biscuits and water bowls so you can bring your furry friends with you!

Dinner
Everything about the Botanist screams “photograph me please!” From the stunning fairylit glass dome ceiling, to the gorgeous floral arrangements and posh looking cocktails, this is a spot perfect for a date night or catching up with your friends.
Their dinner menu is second to none, one of the best sellers is literally a skewer suspended in mid air to grab your immediate attention when the waiter is bringing it over to you! Classic dishes with a delightful atmosphere - it’s definitely worth calling in for a fancy night at the Botanist!
@thebotanistuk
If you aren’t following this crowd on Instagram you are really missing out! Their food creations are like something plucked from a fairy tale, adorning decorative flowers, and micro-greens galore to make not only your food taste amazing but also for your eyes to almost literally go heart-shaped when you see the plates in front of you.
The food is a mix of cultures touching on asian-fusion, British Sunday roasts, delicate afternoon teas, and classic gastronomy dishes. We can’t fault this venue for their delicious food dishes, and their cocktail menu is definitely worth a browse!

When you walk up the stairs to the Purple Peacock you feel as though you could have been dropped into Alice and Wonderland with the bright vibrant colours and open dome ceilings. If you think the venue seems impressive, just wait until you see and taste the dinner menu!
This venue is located in the city centre only a short walk from Grey’s Monument. They are famously known for doing unlimited drinks along with their ‘Drunch’ menu. So if you are wanting to have a celebration with good food and your drinks glass never emptying then this is the place for you!

Drinks
We love this venue for their boujee cocktail menu filled with exciting flavours, and their mega extensive gin collection! With over 100 types of gin from all over the world, and a wide range of tonics and mixers to match, this is the perfect place to gather for a few classy drinks.
The venue itself is spacious and open, and the outdoor seating area has had a big face-lift not too long ago so whatever the weather you can grab your favourite tipple and catch up with friends.

We’ve recently come across this venue, and it is definitely the epitome of Instagram friendly! From the cocktails with cute little figures placed on them as garnish, to the plush velvet interiors and very millennial colour-scheme - this place is perfect for drinks in the very central Cloth Market.
Make sure to ask about their retro table sweet dispenser and you can win some cool prizes in it!
@mothermercybar
We couldn’t ignore the gorgeous Newcastle Quayside, and this gem is located right there! Tiger Hornsby is such a chic venue, it’s got the wow factor as soon as you walk in and spot the floral ceiling, velvet sofas and aesthetic patterns of the rest of the interiors!
Tiger Hornsby has got a huge drinks selection but their cocktail menu is unreal. This romantic spot is even more alive when the live music and DJ starts in the evening, there’s a great buzz about this venue and it’s not one to miss.
The favourite: we couldn’t stop raving about the Watermelon Martini for days!
